French PM mulls Cabinet reshuffle after 2026 budget approval

(MENAFN) France’s prime minister is weighing the option of reorganizing his Cabinet once the 2026 national budget is formally approved, as indicated by individuals familiar with the matter, according to reports released Sunday.

One source said, “The prime minister is considering proposing a government adjustment to the president of the republic after the budget process, if it concludes successfully,” echoing earlier information circulated by reports.

Asked about the possibility of ministerial changes, government spokesperson Maud Bregeon avoided addressing the speculation directly during a television appearance, emphasizing that any Cabinet reshuffle depends on decisions jointly made by the president and the prime minister.

She noted that once the budget process reaches its end, the administration must move beyond routine governance. “With the budget process drawing to a close, the government’s activities cannot be limited to managing day-to-day affairs,” she said, pointing to looming political debates ahead of the 2027 presidential race as well as what she described as “urgent daily issues that cannot wait.”

At the same time, Culture Minister Rachida Dati has indicated she intends to exit the government before the municipal election campaign begins, as she prepares to focus fully on her bid for mayor of Paris.

Two additional ministers may also face choices tied to local political ambitions. Sports Minister Marina Ferrari and Rural Affairs Minister Michel Fournier are both running in upcoming local elections, in Aix-les-Bains and the Vosges area, respectively.

Health Minister Stephanie Rist is another official whose role could be reconsidered after she participated in the second round of a parliamentary by-election in the Loiret department on Sunday. She has previously stated that she would resign from her post if she did not secure the seat.

France has endured prolonged political instability in recent months due to disputes surrounding the passage of the 2026 budget, a process that led to no-confidence motions in parliament and heightened strains within the ruling coalition.

Since assuming office last year, Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu has repeatedly underlined that maintaining political stability and advancing major economic reforms—particularly the budget package—remain at the top of his agenda.
